What Is the Abortion Pill?
A medication abortion uses two types of abortion pills, Mifepristone, and Misoprostol, to end a pregnancy. It’s essential to visit a doctor or medical professional before and after the abortion pill process to make sure you’re eligible and don’t have any complications.
The first abortion pill, Mifepristone, blocks the hormone called progesterone and causes the thinning of the uterus lining, and prevents the embryo from growing or implanting. This first pill is normally taken at a doctor’s office or clinic. The second abortion pill, Misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo through the vagina. This pill is taken after Mifepristone hours or days later. A follow-up with a doctor is necessary to see if the abortion was completed (FDA).
